Le site d'étude est situé sur l'île Bylot, dans l'archipel arctique canadien (Nunavut). Les polygones en coin de glace se trouvent dans la vallée de Qarlikturvik, sur la rive sud de la rivière drainant l'eau de fonte des glaciers C-79 et C-93, à proximité de la station du CEN.
The study site is located on Bylot Island, in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (Nunavut). The ice wedge polygons are found in the Qarlikturvik valley, on the south bank of the river draining melt water from the C-79 and C-93 glaciers, near the CEN station.

Les mares sont situées sur une terrasse de 3–5 d'épaisseur mètres résultant de l'aggradation de dépôts de l’Holocène composés de tourbe mélangée à des sables éoliens et des limons (pergélisol syngénétique).
The ponds are located on a 3–5 m thick terrace resulting from the aggradation of Holocene deposits composed of peat mixed with aeolian sands and silts (syngenetic permafrost).
