Illisarvik is the site of a long-term experiment in permafrost growth and conditions in and around a drained lake (Mackay 1997; Mackay and Burn 2002). The three primary soil environments in Illisarvik and the surrounding terrain are the drained lake basin
Subsite: MRPILLA / Surficial geology: Ice-rich, high-centre peat polygons with degrading ice wedges under pools of standing water. Peat is more than 300 cm thick. / Vegetation: Peat polygon tundra dominated by evergreen shrubs and low birch.
Subsite: MRPILLB / Surficial geology: Till with earth hummocks. / Vegetation: Low shrub tundra dominated by evergreen shrubs, low birch and willow, and sedges.
