3 subsites were chosen at Daring Lake; Heath, Birch shrub, and Fen.
HEATH: Located on a relatively gentle downsloping hill side. This site is situated above the valley where the two other subsites are located.
The organic soil horizon is approximately 2-6 cm deep, but can occasionally appear deeper (up to 17 cm deep).
The upper mineral horizon (5-20 cm) consists of light coloured sand. Below this depth, the lower mineral horizon consists of dark tanned sand with occasional black sand patches (discolouration presumably from leaching).
BIRCH SHRUB: Located in the middle of a broad valley with almost zero sloping, i.e. relatively flat terrain. However, hummocks are numerous making the terrain uneven.
The upper soil horizon consists of a dead moss layer approximately 10-15 cm deep. Beneath is an organic soil layer which continues down to at least 30 cm of depth. Only in one pit did we observe mineral soil at this depth - and at the time of sampling this was the extent of the active layer.
FEN: Located on a lake shore at the bottom of a valley.
The organic soil horizon is at least 30 cm deep, which was the extent of the active layer at the time of sampling.
