Natural environment site. Arviat is located along the west coast of Hudson Bay in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut. The community is located 215 km south of Rankin Inlet and 260 km north of Churchill, Manitoba. It is the third largest urban centre in Nunavut with a population of 1810 in the 2011.

Site description

   
Arviat is located on an esker ridge along the southern shore of the harbour. The ridge forms the north side of a peninsula extending eastward into Hudson Bay. A second, parallel, esker ridge forms the southern edge of the peninsula (Forbes et al., 2014). Subsite 1: Arviat 1 / Ice center polygons / Vegetation: Mosses and grasses Subsite 2: Arviat 5 / Thin organic surface covering sand rich in pebbles and cobbles / Vegetation: Shrub Subsite 3: Arviat 6 / Ice center polygons on a tidal plain. Sandy and organic soil rich in pebbles and cobbles / Vegetation: Mosses and grasses
